Are you an experienced and motivated Database Administrator?

The purpose of this role is as a Database Administrator for all our MS SQL database systems.

The role will be responsible for monitoring, tuning, performance optimization and to provide operational support to all IT and business systems. This is an exciting time to be joining the company as we move more of our systems to the cloud.

Job Title: Database Administrator

Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 depending on experience

Hours: 37 working hour week, Monday to Friday

Key Responsibilities:

  • Owning database administration activities in support of the integrity, availability and security requirements of Group data.
  • Monitors the on-going performance of database management systems, ensuring that operational systems are performing optimally.
  • Implements processes to aid capacity management for the database systems that are supported.
  • Creates and advises on complex database queries for various purposes including bespoke reports, data maintenance and database tuning.
  • Creates and advises on database maintenance including sizing, backup, restore and archiving.
  • Contributes to business continuity planning and Disaster Recovery activities.
  • Deals with sensitive information confidentially and takes practical and relevant precautions against data loss to unauthorised individuals.
  • Proactively innovates to improve performance and stability of Group systems.
  • Consults as directed on Database architecture principles from a group and company perspective.
  • Represents database related subject matter on IT projects - be it fresh installs, migrations or upgrades.
  • Provides troubleshooting services to individual business units in matters of database tuning, management and development. Serve as a point of reference for good practice on database design and performance for MI teams, developers and other IT staff.
  • Adhere to Company processes with regard to Data Protection, FCA compliance and Treating Customers Fairly.
  • Works within the existing business and IT change control processes and advises on best practice for implementing database related changes.

Essential Experience:

  • Able to demonstrate extensive experience in all areas of SQL Server 2012 to 2019.
  • Knowledge of log shipping and AG.
  • Experience with large databases in a high availability 24/7 environment.
  • Knowledge of problem diagnosis and performance tuning techniques.
  • Operational management and optimisation of growing SQL server estate, both on-premises and in the cloud.
  • Experience of working in a fast moving, customer-focused environment, as well as with third party suppliers in relation to the production databases.
  • Flexible, team player with ability to communicate to a wide variety of audiences, both business and technical.
  • Have a strong ability to manage his or her own time effectively and deliver against multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to take ownership and solve problems autonomously.
  • Highly organised with an ability to remain focused and flexible in an ever-changing environment.
  • Willing to learn new technologies that will drive the department and business forward.
  • Ability to assimilate data from various sources and make accurate judgment based decisions.
  • Able to assist in other aspects of the IT department as necessary to deliver a smooth and un-interrupted service to the business.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines, managing and resolving issues in high pressure situations.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with SSIS, SSRS, SSAS.
  • Data warehousing principles, design and maintenance.
  • Microsoft MCSA/MCSE or similar.
  • Azure and Databricks experience.
