Why consider contractors over permanent hires within digital transformation and tech projects?

With the transformation and wider technology market being incredibly fast paced, not to mention competitive, the wait for the right talent to stay ahead of timescales for key projects can be lengthy when you are relying on 3 to 6-month notices to play out (if they play out). With so many companies desperate to secure the market’s top skills in red hot areas such as digital transformation, cloud and data, the best permanent talent are usually in more than one process at once and are getting pulled about like “Stretch Armstrong” by recruiters, not to mention the dreaded counteroffer throwing a proverbial spanner in the works. So ‘why contractors?’, I hear you ask.Commitment: Contractors are far less likely to get the equivalent of a counteroffer, and if being towards the end of their current contract, or even being out of contract they are committed to get into a new project pronto! Availability: Urgent projects aren’t helped by 3-month (or longer) notice periods… contractors are usually available in weeks, and onboarding contractors with a good agency partner can be very quick and easy, so you have the best talent in the market a lot quicker.Cost Effective: Yes, many come on heavy day rates, but there is also the consideration that you are not paying further benefits, or the same costs you would for a permanent member of staff with pension and bonuses, as well as that cost being for a fixed period, not a salary for years to come.Top talent with specialist skills: It is no secret that most of the market’s best talent within transformation, data, and niche tech skills come from the day-rate contract market. This has been the case for many years and yes, again, the day rates can be high, but getting somebody in quickly, with relative ease compared to permanent hiring can be critical for project delivery and success.Ease and saving your time and effort: Using a top contractor onboarding solution could save you significant time and hassle, where all you are doing is interviewing the talent and sending them their kit. The solution provider can take away all the ambiguity of determination, onboarding, checks, compliance, and payrolling to ensure you are safeguarded from every angle and get just what you want, the talent on your project quickly! What are your competitors doing? If you are not utilising contractors to get ahead with your key transformation projects, you can put money on the fact that many of your competitors are. The real question is, can you REALLY AFFORD to be waiting months to hire permanent staff to help drive forward your business-critical transformation projects when your competitors are getting contractors to work in weeks, furthermore what is the long-term cost to a project, or the objectives of your business if competitors hiring contractors to get things done first are staying ahead of you? There’s no doubt you will have ALL heard this before BUT how many hiring managers and internal recruiters can honestly say despite knowing this, will continue to look at the permanent hiring options and come up with the same old issues…? Quite a few I’ll bet!If you are looking for transformation, tech, or data contractors within the insurance sector, or your are looking to implement a digital transformation or tech project, or you are interested in a FREE comprehensive consultation on safeguarding your business by using a market leading end to end contract solution, please give me or the team a shout, we’d be delighted to help.steve@gerrardwhite.com / 07867 360296

So ‘why contractors?’, I hear you ask.

  • Commitment: Contractors are far less likely to get the equivalent of a counteroffer, and if being towards the end of their current contract, or even being out of contract they are committed to get into a new project pronto!

  • Top talent with specialist skills: It is no secret that most of the market’s best talent within transformation, data, and niche tech skills come from the day-rate contract market. This has been the case for many years and yes, again, the day rates can be high, but getting somebody in quickly, with relative ease compared to permanent hiring can be critical for project delivery and success.

Quite a few I’ll bet!
