Join our dynamic business as a Software Development Manager
Opportunity to join one of our growing software engineering teams as a Software Development Manager. You will be working for our many diverse and dynamic businesses. Our solutions encompass all aspects of the business lifecycle from customer-facing channels, integration with our supply chain partners and our back-office processing with manual applications, automated processes, and modern micro-service API based architecture and hybrid cloud hosting.
Your purpose will be to lead and manage one of our software engineering teams to deliver new capabilities and improvements to the solution and outcomes to the business. You will lead the team to solve problems and overcome challenges, whether technical or process to positively benefit the wider business. You will manage the team to ensure change is delivered reliably, robustly and in accordance with best practices to the highest standards.
You will be responsible for the evolution of the team capabilities, process, tools and practices as well as transforming the solution estate with cloud technology and latest best practice engineering techniques.
Job Title: Software Development Manager
Location: Must be commutable (likely twice a week) to one of the following sites: Tunbridge Wells, Chesterfield, Portsmouth or Peterborough
Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 depending on experience
Hours: 35 hour working week. Monday to Friday, Full-Time, Permanent.
Overview
You will lead and manage one of our software engineering teams, working on business and technology change projects, to achieve high standards, through building industry leading, robust and innovative software solutions, which are fit for purpose to meet business goals and strategy.
- Responsible for ensuring all aspects of the development lifecycle and practices are followed.
- Interact with senior business stakeholders, change representatives and architects to present key design considerations in a digestible format that support the business strategy.
- You will liaise with application developers, stakeholders, business analysts and project managers in order to agree functional and non-functional requirements, estimates and relative priority. Manage the workload through the engineering team to successful delivery. Communicate progress and produce regular reports to stakeholders.
- Monitoring the work of all team members including removing barriers, assisting, mentoring and coaching where applicable to progress and reach their potential as individuals and as a team.
- Be responsible for day-to-day line management and performance including 1-2-1s, managing holiday requests, setting objectives, performance appraisals and identifying training and development needs for the team. Manage hybrid/flexible working environment within the team where suitable.
- Create and maintain a professional and creative culture within the team, where individuals take ownership and are excellent at delivering quality, as well as sharing ideas to succeed.
- Manage technical debt with the appropriate balance of maintenance and technology transformation, considering the potential lifespan of the solution, business budget and overall business and technology strategy.
- Take part in the wider community of development managers and engineers, to continually improve the software engineering process.
Key competencies, skills and knowledge · Suitable candidates should have demonstrable experience in a lead role in a software engineering team and ideally have experience of software development and test engineering. · Having a technical or process background with a good understanding of modern software development principles, methodologies and agile software development lifecycles. · Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills at all levels. Able to converse with both technical and non-technical team members and stakeholders. · Skilled in use of appropriate software tools to manage and support the team, including project tracking software and documentation tools. Hands-on familiarity with development tools is also advantageous. · Experience of working in an enterprise level environment, primarily using the Microsoft-based technology stack and cloud services. We are following a hybrid cloud strategy, leading to a cloud agnostic capability. · Awareness and understanding of cloud concepts such as serverless architecture, service-bus / APIs, cloud hosting, containers and micro-services is advantageous. Experience of working within a team using agile methodologies, continuous deployment processes, test-driven development and awareness of security considerations (DevSecOps) advantageous. · You should have a high attention to detail and good problem-solving skills. You will lead the team with a product-centric and business outcome focus. · You will be working within a highly productive and collaborative environment and enjoy delivering great technology and engineering for a great company. · Previous experience of the insurance industry is not required but would be advantageous. |
