Technology isn’t just transforming how insurance works, it’s redefining careers, customer experiences and even the social purpose behind the industry.
In our latest Talking Insurance Podcast episode, Steve Wright, Insurance Recruitment Specialist at Gerrard White, sits down with Kim Ashton, Head of Strategy & Innovation at the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB).
Kim shares her journey from graduate programmer to senior leader at global insurers Allianz and Ageas, to now driving innovation at the MIB, a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to end uninsured driving and support road users across the UK.

“I went for the tech, but I stayed for the insurance”
For Kim, what started as a love of coding soon became a passion for people, processes, and purpose.
“It wasn’t just about building systems - it was about understanding how technology helps real people, from underwriters to claimants.”
That curiosity kept her in the industry for over two decades, shaping her belief that the best technologists are those who understand both code and customer impact.
Technology with a social purpose
Today, at the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, Kim leads technology strategy and innovation in an organisation that exists for the public good.
MIB manages claims for people hit by uninsured or untraced drivers and runs critical data services such as the Motor Insurance Database, helping police identify uninsured vehicles and improving road safety nationwide.
“At MIB, technology isn’t about profit or competition. It’s about purpose - getting people back on their feet and making roads safer.”
AI as an assistant, not a replacement
AI is transforming insurance — but not in the way headlines suggest.
Kim explains how AI, automation, and data analytics can support teams rather than replace them:
AI as a co-pilot to remove repetitive tasks and free people for high-value work.
Smarter data use to enhance decision-making.
Ethical adoption of new technology to build trust and transparency.
“We see AI as an assistant. It’s about helping people do their jobs better - not taking their jobs away.”
The future of insurance: connected and autonomous
Looking ahead, Kim predicts a radical shift as connected and autonomous vehicles change how insurance works.
Policies could evolve from 365-day cover to 365-second on-demand insurance, verified in real time through connected systems.
“Imagine a car that won’t start unless it confirms you’re insured. That kind of innovation could transform the industry — and help end uninsured driving for good.”
Leadership, learning and opportunity
Beyond technology, Kim shares insights into leadership, hiring, and what makes a great technologist.
She looks for passion and aptitude — not just technical skills — and encourages young people to explore the growing world of insurtech careers.
“You can teach code, but you can’t teach curiosity. Passion and business understanding are what make great people in tech.”
Key takeaways for insurers and tech professionals
Technology and purpose can coexist — and create better outcomes for customers.
AI should assist, not replace, to drive productivity and engagement.
Connected vehicles could redefine insurance models and road safety.
Curiosity and communication are the most valuable skills for tomorrow’s tech leaders.
